As Nutanix continues to battle for hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) market dominance with VMware, it also competes with legacy storage players and public cloud providers. On the other hand, Nutanix partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure to build its hybrid, multicloud platform, CEO Rajiv Ramaswami said.
“Public cloud players are both partners and competitors in the sense that workloads can go natively and run in the public cloud,” Ramaswami told SDxCentral. “But we also partner with AWS, [and] we also partner with Azure to be able to bring more workloads into the cloud and help our customers with a true hybrid, multicloud experience.”
The vendor extends its platform into the public cloud “with an emphasis on disaster recovery and flexible capacity use cases,” he said during the second fiscal quarter of 2022 earnings call.
Nutanix rolled out AWS Nutanix Cloud Cluster in 2020, and the platform is in preview on Microsoft Azure. The vendor hasn’t announced a general availability date for the Azure service, but “there's a good list of customers waiting for the solution, so we are of course very anxious to get it out there as soon as we can,” Ramaswami said.
While focusing on executing on AWS and Azure, Nutanix’s long term goal is “to open up and have more top service providers in the mix,” he added. “Oracle, Google Cloud, IBM, everybody, Alibaba even — those are all potential future public cloud partners for us.”
That strategy was one of the drivers behind the vendor's growth in the second fiscal quarter.. Its revenue increased 19% year over year to $413 million.
Ramaswami also touted Nutanix’s new streamlined product portfolio and its Cloud Platform capabilities in the earnings call. “We’ve seen a more rapid closure for some deals, utilizing the new simplified pricing and packaging,” he said.
The simplified portfolio boils down to five core areas: cloud infrastructure, cloud management, complementary storage, database, and desktop services. It brings together the company’s product capabilities across on-premise and multicloud environments, including Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure, Cloud Clusters, Cloud Manager, Unified Storage, Database Service, and End User Computing Solutions.
“The new portfolio has been received very well by customers, by partners, and of course, our own sellers because it fundamentally aligns with what customers are looking for,” Ramaswami said. “Keep in mind that there's a period of transition here where we keep both the old and the new [portfolio] for a while, and then gradually transition over to new” for existing customers, he added.
